A registered dietitian is a nutrition and food specialist that can plan food and nutrition programs for individuals, organizations, hospitals, schools, even athletic departments. These programs are designed to promote better eating habits, prevent illness and treat health problems.

Dietitian is an accredited title that specifically refers to:

  • A person who has completed a bachelor’s degree approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • A person who needs to complete a supervised, accredited internship program at a hospital, health care facility, community agency or foodservice corporation.
  • A professional who passes an exam administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration and maintain her license by attending continuing education courses.
